Musical Spotlight: RENT

thestagedoorcanteen:

As per request of youwilldieofboredom, next up on the spotlight is the all-time favorite musical who garnered Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Musical under its belt - RENT.

Show background:

Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Boheme, the musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop production at New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same Off-Broadway theater was also Rent’s initial home when it opened on January 25, 1996. The musical moved to the larger Nederlander Theater on Broadway on April 29, 1996.

In total, the show had 5,124 performances in 12 years. Rent is now the 9th longest running musical of all time. And because the musical is such a hit, it has been adapted into a motion picture in 2005, a filmed version of the last performance on Broadway, and led to several national tours and a number of foreign productions. x

Book, Music and Lyrics by: Jonathan Larson
Choreography by: Marlies Yearby
Directed by: Michael Greif

Plot:

RENT tells the story of one year in the life of friends living the Bohemian life in modern day East Village, New York City, 1989-1990. Among the group are our narrator, nerdy love-struck filmmaker Mark Cohen; the object of Mark’s affection, his former girlfriend, Maureen Johnson; Maureen’s Harvard-educated public interest lawyer and lesbian lover Joanne Jefferson; Mark’s roommate, HIV-positive musician and former junkie, Roger Davis; Roger’s new girlfriend, the HIV-positive drug addicted S&M dancer, Mimi Marquez; their former roommate, HIV-positive computer genius Tom Collins; Collins’ HIV-positive drag queen street musician/lover Angel; and Benjamin Coffin III, a former member of the group who married for money and has since become their landlord and the opposite of everything they stand for. Shows how much changes or doesn’t change in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year. x

Original Broadway cast includes Anthony Rapp (Mark), Adam Pascal (Roger), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Mimi), Jesse L. Martin (Collins), Wilson Jermaine Heredia (Angel), Fredi Walker (Joanne), and real life sweethearts Idina Menzel (Maureen) and Taye Diggs (Benny).

Current productions: Off-Broadway

Why we love it:

Rent will be forever loved by the Filipinos. It may be set in NYC, but we can still relate to the story itself, regardless of the setting. We do encounter problems when it comes to our dues, our rent; some of us are striving hard to do whatever job is available, earn money in an instant to provide for our needs; the vices and temptations of the world that we just can’t seem to resist, like illegal drugs; falling in love with the same sex and opening our eyes and minds to bisexuality and struggling with HIV. But amidst all these hardships, we Filipinos stay true to ourselves and to the people around us. This comfort we get from them, this love, makes us stronger and helps us to face another day.

Aside from the story, the music is another thing that Filipinos can’t get enough of. The rock element in the score gives jolt to our ears and makes every song memorable.

Plus, it’s Jonathan Larson’s masterpiece. The passion he put on creating the show is just pure genius. It’s his life that these actors are recreating every single show. Read HERE.

Featured songs:

Seasons of Love

Let’s face it. This is the official anthem of every RENThead in the world. The message of this song pinches the heart of every person who’ll be hearing it. It tells us why we should enjoy and nourish every moment with our friends, family and loved ones.

One Song Glory

In this song, Roger recalls his songwriter/rockstar days. He is reminded what his life is like when his ex-girlfriend April was still alive, until their vices came into the picture. He never finished a single song since then. Now, all he wanna do is to write a song before he expires.

Santa Fe

Collins sings as he dreams about putting up a restaurant in Sante Fe, leaving everything to the roaches and mice.

La Vie Boheme

Bohemian life in English, the song celebrates bohemianism as the cast mocks the antagonist, Benny. It lists many ideas, trends, and other symbols of bohemianism. It is a song holding a toast to bohemianism and shouting out what inspires them.

Finale B

It is composed of several songs sung in the musical. The songs leaves the audience with the final yet heavy thought: No Day But Today.

• Other favorites: Today 4 U, I’ll Cover You, I Should Tell You, Take Me or Leave Me, Without You, Goodbye Love

Local Production:

Rent has been staged in Manila a couple of times in the past  years. In 1999, Monique Wilson and Bobby Garcia mounted the musical under New Voice Company. The cast includes Calvin Millado as Roger, JM Rodriguez as Mark, Michael De Mesa as Collins, Ricci Chan as Angel, Amparo Sietereales as Mimi, Monique Wilson as Maureen, Lynne Sherman as Joanne and Jamie Wilson as Benny.

In 2001, then newly-formed theater company Atlantis Productions (Garcia) staged Rent again and had multiple runs both in Manila in Singapore with slight cast changes:  Rachel Alejandro as Mimi, Jake Macapagal as Angel, Lana Jalosjos and Ana Fegi alternate as Maureen, and Bituin as Joanne.

Years later, 9 Works Theatrical Inc. bought the licensing rights to stage this brilliant musical again in Manila for a month on February 2010. It featured Gian Magdangal as Roger, Fredison Lo as Mark, Cara Barredo and Nicole Asensio alternate as Mimi, Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Maureen, OJ Mariano as Collins, Job Bautista as Angel, Jenny Villegas as Joanne and Noel Rayos as Benny.

And due to popular demand, Rent had a rerun in Manila. Still under 9 Works Theatrical Inc., it enjoyed a limited run in December 2010 and another full run in February 2011. Some of the cast of last year’s production did a reprise of their roles while there are also new actors who joined the show. Sheree Bautista and Ciara Sotto alternate as Mimi, Mian Dimacali and Carla Guevara-Lafortezaalternate as Maureen, and Lorenz Martinez played Benny.

At the closing show of the 2011 run of Rent, director Robbie Guevara said that this might be the last time that such beautiful musical will ever grace the Manila stage; we will not be seeing RENT for a long time

Try watching RENT: Final Days on Broadway (part 1 here) - a special feature included in the RENT: Filmed Live on Broadway DVD and Blu-Ray release. It has interviews of the original cast, the final cast and the people working behind the show. Also, they reminisce what was it like to work with Larson before his death. Now, that’s a tearjerker.

RENTheads! Put on your headphones and have the RENT OBC recording on repeat. Watch the movie and filmed live versions, or even video bootlegs online. Laugh, cry and spit your Aaaw!’s with this amazing piece of a musical.

Just accept it

Etong idinadaldal ko pa dati na professional theater workshop, di ko alam kung anong meron eh. Kahit andaming dapat gawin. Kahit parang kinakain niya na yung time mo for other stuffs like, studying and focusing to your acads/BACKLOG subject. Kahit ginagabi ka na ng uwi (hello! Ortigas to Tondo = 1 hour of travel!:|) at yung pasok mo every morning ay 7:30am pero nauurong ng mga 8 or 8:30am dahil siyempre, sir Kevin ba naman eh. HAHA. Ika nga ni Ma’am Luchie:

Kung ako nga nahihirapan sa 7:30am, si Kevin pa kaya!

My adviser is so funneh, right? HAHA

Ewan. Parang may magic talaga eh. Parang nawawala yung pagod ko. Kahit feeling ko, memorize ko na lahat ng galaw ng mga tao sa CAS dahil maghapon akong naandon. Actually, eto sked ko araw-araw:

7:30am-9:30am      :     CHEM 157

9:30am-12:00pm    :     Flying time

12:00pm-2:00pm    :     HUM I

2:00pm-5:30pm      :    Flying time/Nap time

5:30pm-6:30pm      :    Travel time to Ortigas

6:30pm-9:30pm      :    Rep Phils Adult Summer Theater Class

9:30pm-10:30pm    :    Travel time to Home

10:30pm-6:30pm    :    HOME

and the loop goes on and on and on and on and on…
